Instagram strategy: turn comments and DMs into customers

Post to start conversations, not to be admired, then do the actual selling in the DMs.

The play

The highest-win move on Instagram is this: post things that invite a reply, and do the actual selling in the DMs. Not in the caption. Not on the link in your bio. In a one-to-one thread where you can ask a question and get an answer.

Instagram looks like a media app and behaves like a messaging app. Reels and carousels are how strangers find you. The decision to buy happens after that, in a thread, usually inside a few messages. Optimize only for the feed and you do the hard half while skipping the half that pays.

That maps cleanly onto the three beats. Get the word out with posts and comments that end in an instruction. Capture the interest by pulling that instruction into the DMs, where Instagram has almost no friction. Then do not lose it: every DM and every comment lands in your Magic Queue with a reply already drafted, waiting on your approval.

What this platform is actually good at

Instagram's real strength is discovery and intimacy in the same app. Almost nowhere else can a stranger find you at 9pm and be messaging you at 9:02. Its real limit is that it fights links, and it forgets you fast.

  • Reels get shown to people who do not follow you. That free reach is the main reason to be here.
  • Carousels get saved and reopened. A teaching carousel still works weeks after a Reel goes cold.
  • DMs are native and expected. People message businesses here without thinking twice, which is not true on most platforms.
  • Links only work in your bio and in Story link stickers. Captions do not hyperlink, so traffic gets routed, not linked.
  • Reach is spiky. One post is never a plan, and a strong week can be followed by a dead one for no visible reason.

Get the word out

Outbound here is two jobs: publish, and show up in other people's comments. Most people do the first and skip the second, which is why their reach never compounds. Commenting puts you in front of an audience someone else built, and it costs minutes.

What earns attention, in order: short Reels with one idea and the hook in the first line, carousels that teach one thing completely, Stories for the people who already follow you. Polish is not your constraint. Frequency is. Three Reels, one carousel and Stories most days is a workable rule of thumb for one person.

  1. Ship three short Reels. One idea each, hook in the first line, one instruction at the end.
  2. Post one carousel that teaches a single thing end to end, the kind of thing someone screenshots.
  3. Post Stories most days: what you are working on, a question sticker, one plain mention of what you sell.
  4. Leave ten comments a day on accounts your buyer already reads. Add the thing they left out, or say nothing.
  5. Reply to every comment on your own posts within the first hour. Early replies keep a post alive.
  6. Message the five people who engaged most this week. No pitch, just a question about what they are building.

Capture the interest

Instagram makes you route traffic instead of linking to it, and that turns out to be an advantage. The strongest call to action here never leaves the app: ask for a comment, then move that person into a DM. One tap, no bounce, and you land in a conversation.

Your bio link should point at one place and stay there: your Aura Store page, with the thing you want people to buy at the top. Rotating it weekly trains people to ignore it. The first DM then has one job, deliver what you promised and ask one question. No pitch, no wall of text, no three messages in a row.

  • Caption CTA: "Comment TEMPLATE and I'll send you the one-page version."
  • Comment reply: "Sending it over now, check your DMs."
  • First DM: "Here it is. What's the bit you're actually stuck on?"
  • Warm-up: "What have you tried so far? I'll tell you if it's worth fixing or worth scrapping."
  • Soft close: "Want me to walk you through it, or are you good to run with it?"

Don't lose it

Instagram DMs feel like texting, so they get judged like texting. A reply four hours later reads as busy. A reply the next morning reads as not interested. The realistic bar for one person: answer inside an hour during your working day, same day at the latest, and say something even before you have the full answer.

The failure mode here is not laziness. It is the heart react. Someone comments, you like the comment, you tell yourself you will DM them later, and later never comes. Every liked-but-unanswered comment is a person who raised their hand and got a nod.

Speed beats wording

A blunt reply in ten minutes will out-earn a perfect one tomorrow. That is the whole point of drafts being written in advance and held: your job shrinks to reading, fixing the first line, and approving.

When someone goes quiet after a good exchange, follow up twice and stop. One nudge the next day that adds something, one more a few days later, then let it go. Aura Blaster has a place for exactly this: hit "Remind me" on the item and the follow-up comes back to you as a queued move with a draft attached, still waiting on your approval. Nothing goes out in a voice that is not yours.

Set it up in Aura Blaster

Instagram is the deepest integration in the product. Inbound is fully wired: DMs and comments both flow in, drafts are waiting, and once you approve one it sends back through Instagram automatically. Outbound is mostly a deep link for now.

  1. Open Channels and connect Instagram. It is a real OAuth connection to the account you post from.
  2. Fill in Persona before you approve anything: what you sell, how you talk, your objection handling, and your purchase link. Point that link at your Aura Store page and put the same URL in your Instagram bio. Every draft is grounded in the Persona, so a thin one gives you thin replies.
  3. Set Strategy: posting frequency, goal, content style, tone. Leave Instagram in, so the Blast Queue keeps feeding you moves for it.
  4. Work the Magic Queue twice a day. Every incoming DM and every comment on your posts sits there with an AI-drafted reply. Approve, edit, regenerate or skip. Approved replies send through Instagram automatically, and nothing sends without you.
  5. Work the Blast Queue for outbound. One move at a time, tagged Instagram, draft ready, deep-linked into the app so you can post it. Auto-publishing to Instagram is built, but it needs Meta App Review to clear before it switches on for your org, so plan on posting by hand for now.
  6. Use "Remind me" on anyone who went quiet and on anything else you cannot do right now. It comes back on the Calendar next to your scheduled posts, and Messages holds the full thread history when you need context.

What kills it

Most Instagram failure is not creative failure. It is a broken handoff between the post and the conversation.

  • Posting with no instruction at the end. Fix: close every post with one action, comment a word, DM a word, or tap the bio link.
  • Putting a URL in a caption. Fix: captions do not hyperlink, so route people to a comment or a DM instead of asking anyone to retype a link.
  • Treating comments as applause. Fix: they are inbound, they land in the Magic Queue with a draft, so answer them like the messages they are.
  • Pitching in the first DM. Fix: send what you promised, ask one question, and let them tell you what they need.
  • Batching a week of posts into one afternoon, then vanishing. Fix: three small posts across the week beats five in a day.
  • Approving drafts on autopilot. Fix: read the first line of every one, because that is where a generic reply gives itself away.

Your first two weeks

One thing at a time. Work straight down the list — every line is a single move you can finish today, and none of them needs the one under it to be done first.

  • Connect Instagram in Channels, then send yourself a test DM and confirm it lands in the Magic Queue with a draft.
  • Write your Persona properly: offer, voice, objection handling, purchase link.
  • Point your bio link at your Aura Store page and leave it there.
  • Set Strategy: frequency, goal, tone, content style, with Instagram left in.
  • Ship three Reels and one carousel, each ending with one comment-a-word instruction.
  • Clear the Magic Queue twice a day, morning and end of day, and approve nothing you have not read.
  • Comment on ten posts a day in your buyer's feed, five days running.
  • Move every warm commenter into a DM with one question instead of a pitch.
  • Set a "Remind me" on everyone who went quiet, then send each follow-up yourself, one at a time.
  • Check which post produced the most DMs, then make two more like it.
